Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to make a box?

“Strangely, the size of the box doesn’t dictate the time it takes to produce. It’s all about the design; the more detailed the work the longer it takes. On average a box will take between 7-15 hours to produce from scratch. However, batch production helps improve efficiency and makes workshop management a lot easier.”

Where do you get your wood from?

“All my wood comes from specialist veneer suppliers with proven track records for sustainability and professional accountability.”

Are they a limited Edition?

“Yes and no, some of the boxes are limited to a set number for that design. On the base of these boxes you will find the year of production, box number and total in the edition.”

How did you get into Marquetry?

“It’s a long story that happened over many years but the cut down version can be found on the About me page.”

What varnish do you use?

“For all of my marquetry boxes I use a shellac finish. For the boxes with a printed design I use a water-based synthetic varnish. to find out more visit the box finish page of my website.”

Will they fade over time?

“All wood will change when exposed to direct sunlight. Some species get darker, others fade and most dyed/stained veneers will loose their colour completely over time. A lot of people don’t realise that the elaborate marquetry furniture of the 17th Century (admired for its rich brown tones today) was originally a riot of colour.

Take a look at this example Chest-of-drawers, 1780 (F247) by Jean-Henri Riesener. My advice is to keep your box away from strong sunlight and it should be fine for many years.”

Do you sell internationally?

“Currently no, but this may change in the future. Contact me by email if you would like to discuss this further.”

Do you take commissions?

“Yes. I have had many commissions and many delighted customers collaborating with me to make a special gift for a loved one. If you would like to do the same, reach out to me via email.”
