The Zodiac Collection
Celebrating celestial beauty with the magnificence of marquetry, these boxes make the perfect birthday gift.
The lid features an astronomically accurate star sign using brass wire and mother of pearl inlay.
Capturing the beauty of the stars
This collection started life as an experiment. I always said I would never use stained or dyed wood in my creations, as I didn’t feel it was respectful to the natural beauty of the woodgrain. However, I quickly changed my mind when I experienced the chatoyance of the finished wood. The ability to see into the fibres of the grain depth creates an almost optical illusion when rotated in the light. This effect when combined with the reflective brass wire and mother of pearl, makes for a truly beautiful result.
The other woods used are White Macassar Ebony and a manmade version of Birdseye maple. This veneer is made in Germany using a laminating process, that allows them to recreate the pattern of Birdseye maple, using more sustainably sourced wood. The combination of rich blues with the warm pale wood showcases the central sign and unifies the collection.
Once all 12 were created, I realised that they needed a central hub to orbit around. This resulted in the Celestial box. As well as the previously mentioned veneers, this lid design also features Lime and Abalone, adding to the already complex interplay of light.
